CHAPTER ELEVEN

Screams filled the room as the flames hit a wall of force, which curled out of my body in a half dome. Kyrie scrambled beside me to help his people to their feet and guide them out of the room. Rye was at the doors trying to calm the throng of panicked people. Another set of doors had opened to my right, and frightened guests streamed through to safety. The flames roared against the barrier I’d erected, but I couldn’t push them back. It was like they were being fed from a constant source.

Warm hands circled my waist, as Devrynth embraced me. His wings curled around me creating a cocoon of protection.

“I’ve got you. Don’t worry about attacks from the outside. Concentrate on the fire. There are people inside the barrier,” he said. My heart lurched. My brother was in there. I felt him. He was using music to gather the unharmed to him in a ward within my barrier. He moved to the edges of my magic.

“Can you hold it back if I help people out?” he asked. A bead of sweat rolled down my temple.

“Yes, just hurry.”

“Colton and Ruby have others who will exit on the other side. They will go first. Focus on them. I can hold my power longer than they can. Those I’ve saved I have enthralled to lower their anxiety.” Enthralled. My brother had enthralled beings, and I didn’t hate it. If they decided to rush out of the barrier, I might not be able to hold it.

A green glow approached the right side of my dome. I saw Colton wave toward me through the haze. I braced myself for the breach of my magic. When his hand pierced the wall, I grunted in pain. Needles of magic stabbed at my insides. Dev’s fingers flexed, pulling me tighter to him. He buried his face in my neck, touching my skin.

“Use my power if you need it,” he said.

“No.” I responded through heavy breaths.

“Don’t be stubborn now, Kallai. Their lives are depending on you. I’m here so you can use me.”

I was determined not to draw power from him. He reached out to my wrist and pressed the dragon charm against my skin. I felt the warmth and fierce intensity of the Fire Realm housed in the charm. I sighed as the comforting magic rolled through me. If I wouldn’t take it from him, he know I’d accept it from the charm.

“The last of those with Ruby and Colton had exited the barrier,” Kyrie said at my right. “How is she?”

“She’s being a stubborn brat and won’t funnel magic through me,” Dev reported.

Kyrie tucked himself at my right side. “Wildfire, look at me.” I obeyed his kingly command. “If you don’t, many more people will die. Devrynth is your connection to the Fire Realm. He can direct that magic to you so that you aren’t weakened. I’m begging you to save these people.”

Opening up a conduit with Devrynth would build a connection between us that went beyond magic.
